List of essential Windows files

  • Could you provide a definitive list of essential files used by each of Windows 98, 95, and Me? Sometimes you mention how to eliminate specific unwanted auto loading files. However, there remains a rag-tag of unknown file names, some of which may or may not be essential for Windows operation. We could all experiment much more readily if you could advise us which ones these are and then we can eliminate others without the threat of losing Windows. Thanks.

I wish that I knew all of the essential files for Windows operation! Unfortunately, I cannot list all the essential files for Windows operation in Windows 98 let alone 95 and ME. If I were to list them, there would be literally tens of thousands of files and it would take some time to list these, not to mention the huge amount of space that it would take up. However, if you do have a few weeks on your hands, you could try doing it by doing a clean install of Windows and then listing all the files in the Windows directory. However, also bear in mind that there are hidden Windows system files all over the place as well (such as in the C: root directory). But if you do accomplish this huge task, please let me know!

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
