Overwriting

  • I am running WindowsMe on a Intel Celeron 500Mhz. I have just installed WindowsMe and it seems to be running fine except for an unusual problem. Whenever I type email messages in Netscape, using Notepad, or on message boards, the text blurs whenever I attempt to correct a typing error. If I go back a couple of characters and attempt to correct the error (rather than deleting the old text) the new text simply types over the top. Furthermore, if I delete an entire line it drags the text up without clearing the original line of text. As a temporary workaround, I now cut and paste text from Word to send emails. If I paste to a reply email message, again the text goes over the top of the existing script. It seems to clear things back to normal when I send the message (the original text is pushed back down the screen and the blurring has cleared). The strange thing is the problem happens in Notepad but not in ICQ or Word. Any ideas?

I am not quite clear about the problem you are experiencing but there are two possible scenarios worth exploring anyway. The first scenario is when you are typing and try to correct an error somewhere in the script, the text you type is overwriting that which you previously typed (ie. it doesn’t insert text but overwrites it). In this case, try pressing the ‘Insert’ key in affected applications. Nothing visible will occur when you hit this key but this key changes from insert mode to overwrite mode and vice-versa. Insert mode is when you type and you can insert new text in existing script, whereas overwrite mode is when you go back in the script and instead of inserting text, the new text that you type, overwrites and replaces the existing text in the script. However, if this isn’t your problem then you are probably experiencing the second scenario. This is when you try to correct an error or delete lines, text overlaps other text so you essentially have two sets of text on top of each other. I have also intermittently experienced a similar problem sometimes, when text and graphics on websites has overlapped. Normally a reboot fixes this problem for me. I found that a more permanent solution to this problem was to reinstall Windows. As this problem you are experiencing is not limited to just one application, it looks like it may be a Windows problem as opposed to a specific application. I have had a look around the internet for any signs of similar problems to yours but without result (which accounts for the delay in responding to your question). The only other suggestion I can offer at the moment is to change your web browser and email client from Netscape to another such as Internet Explorer (which is included with WindowsMe) in the hope that the problem doesn’t occur in Internet Explorer. However, if the problem does persist then you may need to reinstall WindowsMe to see if this resolves the problem. If any other readers have any other suggestions for Ben, please write in.
