We just bought a new 32 Mb 3D Graphic Accelerator card. When we try to run a program in GL mode, after one or so minutes it freezes. We run it on a Celeron 400, with 64 Meg of SDRAM and an 8 gig hard drive. Any suggestions? (more…)

My problem is to do with Internet Explorer 5.5 and the content advisor. Content Advisor came up with the message that it was missing files. I attempted to fix the problem as suggested by Microsoft Knowledge Base by changing the file extension on the file RATINGS.POL to .OLD. However, Content Advisor created a second copy of RATINGS.POL so I repeated the procedure. Now the problem is every time I use Internet Explorer a message appears saying that ‘Content Advisor does not have access to that site’. My workaround solution is to go into the Content Advisor settings and tick ‘Allow access to sites with no rating’ every time I use Internet Explorer. A second problem I have is that while being able to access the internet, after a differing amount of time it won’t respond. When attempting to do a MS-DOS ping a request time out message appears. Finally, when booting up Windows I get a message that says PCNFS.386 is missing. Can you tell me where a copy of PCNFS.386 can be found and what it does? (more…)

I bought a new computer in October 2000. It’s operating system is WindowsMe. A few weeks ago it prompted me for WindowsMe updates via the internet which I downloaded. Once I restarted the computer, a message appeared about possible problems I could encounter with such updates. It gave me a long list of instructions which were too confusing for me to follow. I decided to attempt a reinstall of WindowsMe but it would not let me. I can still use my current programs but if I decide to install anything new it will not let me. For example, I bought a CD writer and WindowsMe will not let me install the software. If I attempt to, SETUP.EXE generates errors. I tried to do a system restore to a few weeks prior to doing the internet updates which seemed to work. However, when I installed my new anti-virus software the system is unable to shutdown properly (the screen goes grey but will not shutdown). Once I remove this Virus software the system shuts down successfully. Any suggestions? (more…)

My system is running Windows 98 with 12gb hard drive, and 128mb RAM. I am unable to defragment my hard disk because when it reaches 10 per cent it stops. I tried running the defragment through Safe Mode (by hitting F8 during start up) but this did not solve the problem. If it is relevant, I run Disk Defragmenter through ‘Windows Explorer’ and selecting ‘Drive C’ then going to the ‘File’ menu > ‘Properties’ > ‘Tools’ > ‘Defragment Now’. Any suggestions? (more…)

My PC is running on a Gateway Intel Celeron 500 MHz processor. Since purchasing the PC last July I’ve had an intermittent fault when shutting down Windows 98. It happens after I have been on the internet or receiving/sending email’s. I usually have to depress the On/Off switch to shut down. I contacted Gateway about this problem and they sent me the ‘Second Edition Shutdown supplement for Windows: 239887up’ patch to rectify the problem, but it still recurs. Can you help please? (more…)
