    While downloading Microsoft recommended updates I have inadvertently downloaded a program which replaces all icons with the Microsoft download logo. I have uninstalled all the programs which I installed on that particular day but the ‘download’ icons persist. How can I get back to how the system was running originally?   • Windows password prompt

    I had to reinstall Windows as my scanner and camera software would not install on my computer. Now I encounter a Windows password prompt whenever I boot up my computer. Secondly, my Dial-up Networking box now has the ‘Save Password’ and ‘Connect Automatically’ boxes grayed out. Can you please help? (more…)

    I utilise Outlook Express through Internet Explorer 5.5 using Windows 98. I subscribe to two CNET newsletters, being, CNET.Download.com Dispatch and CNET ICQ Tips Dispatch. Both of these subscriptions have a link to one.digital.cnet.com within each newsletter. My problem is when I attempt to open these links I get a ‘Cannot Open This Page’ message in Internet Explorer.   • Hardware wizard appearing on startup

    I have recently installed Windows ME on my home computer. Because it did not interact well with my existing modem, I bought a new modem. The modem manufacturer has talked me through the procedure to make my system accept the modem drivers from the provided CD as Windows ME was not letting me install any drivers but its own. Now, every time I start up, the hardware wizard appears inviting me to try to load new drivers all over again (even though experience tells me it would not accept them readily anyway). There is no obvious option under ‘msconfig’ for me to stop this message appearing at start up, and I would be very grateful for your advice on how to do this. (more…)
