A fatal exception 0E in VXD MCSCAN32(01)

  • I run Windows 98 with Microsoft Outlook 97 and Internet Explorer 5. I continually get the ‘Blue Screen of Death’ with the following error message ‘A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C154E79C in VXD MCSCAN32(01) + 000194BC. The current application will be terminated. Press any key to terminate the application. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL again to restart your computer. You will lose any unsaved information in all applications’ Do you have any thoughts for me please?

This problem is related to McAfee VirusScan which you have installed on your computer (I can tell because MCSCAN32 is a component of VirusScan). If the problem is not occurring with Outlook 97, then this problem is probably related to the VirusScan DAT files which are the virus definition files. Firstly, update the virus definition files and (this is optional) try to update the program if possible. Should the problem persist, reinstall VirusScan to see if that solves the problem. If this does not work, you may have to swap to a different virus scanning software. I have seen others who have posted similar questions on the internet and have not been able to fix the problem with that particular software combination. Have a look at InoculateIT which is a free virus scanner and can be downloaded from antivirus.cai.com. However, if you are experiencing this problem when starting Outlook 97, this may be related to the McAfee ‘Exchange Scan’ feature in Outlook. In this case, have a look at the Microsoft Knowledge Base article support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q198/0/63.ASP. Although this article relates to Outlook 98, if you are experiencing the same problem it can probably be applied to your situation as well.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
