Stop downloading of EXE and ZIP files

  • I administer a small network of computers in a local training centre. The network has internet access via an ADSL modem. Is there any way that I can stop people downloading EXE and ZIP files from the internet? The network is peer to peer with all computers running Windows NT 4 workstation. Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to restrict file types with Windows NT 4. So, you will have to use a third-party firewall on your gateway computer (the one which accesses the internet). Have a look at a piece of software called ‘Proxy +’ which can be downloaded from www.proxyplus.cz. This has a feature that will allow you to restrict downloads off the internet according to content type (eg. EXEs and ZIPs). Proxy + is free for up to 3 users but you will have to pay if you have over 3 users. However, I suggest that you firstly download the software and try it out with only 3 users to see if it is worthwhile for your group.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
