Regsvr32: No DLL name specified
-
I run Windows 95 on an IBM Aptiva LQ6. Since loading Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 2001, when I boot up a message titled ‘Regsvr32′ appears saying ‘No DLL name specified’. Beneath that it goes on ‘Usage Regsvr32 (u)(s)(n)(i) (cmdlime) dll name /u unregsvr; /s silent display no message boxes; /c console output…’ I click ok and the PC loads with no problems. Why does this window appear and what does it mean? Secondly, I had several folders in my HP PaperPort application with documents filed in them which have disappeared leaving only the Main Folder. These folders and their contents can be accessed in Windows Explorer. However, when I attempt to copy the folder to the PaperPort folder in Explorer, the original folder instead duplicates itself and refuses to copy itself to PaperPort. How can restore the folder to the PaperPort application ?
Regsvr32 is used to register and unregister object linking and embedding controls, such as dynamic link libraries (DLLs). The problem that you are experiencing with the error message seems to be more of an annoyance than a show stopper. The translation of the message is that something is trying to register a DLL on startup but it doesn’t give the DLLs filename so it gives the error message. This could either be caused by Norton Anti-Virus trying to register the DLL or, alternatively, the problem could be caused if Norton Anti-Virus has recently discovered a virus but has not managed to completely cleanse your system of that virus. If you have been visited by a virus recently, go to www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html and search for it. Have a look at the instructions for removing the virus (if there are any) and make sure that it has been fully removed from your system. If there are no instructions for removing the virus at the Symantec site, download the latest virus definition files for Norton and re-scan your system. If this does not fix your problem, then the problem is probably caused by Norton Anti-Virus itself. If this is the case, I am not sure how to proceed from here. I suggest that you contact Symantec to see if they can help with your problem. Symantec charge for telephone support but do not charge for online support. Go to www.symantec.com/techsupp/contact.html and select your product, at the next screen, click ‘free online support’ under ‘contact a technician for…’, after that select your operating system, then choose the ‘Technical Questions’ category, at the next screen, click ‘post’, and at the final screen type in your details and description of the problem. You should receive a response by the end of the next working day.
Now let’s move onto your second problem with HP PaperPort. For readers who are not familiar with this software, when a document is scanned, it is sent to PaperPort which has links to the most frequently used applications. Then, the scanned document can be dragged and dropped onto these applications which can be used for editing, viewing, and performing other operations with the scanned document. You may be experiencing this problem as PaperPort may not support drag-and-drop from the Windows Explorer. I had a read of the manual and while it mentions the drag-and-drop items within the application itself, no mention is made of exporting documents to other applications. Possibly try copying or moving the items into PaperPort by using the ‘Move to Folder’ or ‘Copy to Folder’ commands on the ‘Desktop’ menu (these instructions may not exactly match the procedure you should follow as I am referring to a manual for PaperPort 5.3). If this does not work, then I suggest that you contact ScanSoft who are the makers of PaperPort. You can find their technical support page at support.scansoft.com/ppmain.asp and their contact page at www.scansoft.com/support/helprequest.asp.
