In one of your recent articles you helped someone whose computer could only manage to display 16 colours at 640 x 480 resolution when running Windows 98. I have the exact same problem but with Windows 95. Your solutions for Windows 98 did not work for me though. The resolution bar on the settings display is grayed out on 640 x 480 pixels. Can you help? (more…)

One of my PCs has just developed a problem where it will only boot in Windows Safe Mode and even then it takes a very long time to boot up. Should I then try a restart, the PC stops in mid boot-up with a message saying that it is having trouble initializing Device VCACHE. The PC is a Pentium 100 running Win 98 SE. Hope you can help. I have two annoying problems. Firstly my children were playing around with my computer and put on software which I later deleted. Now, every time I start up the computer the message appears: ‘Remind: Invalid Schedule File C:Program FilesHeroes3Register
emind.sch’. The Heroes3 directory and all of its contents no longer exist. How do I get rid of the message? Secondly, I do a lot of work in Wagga Wagga and often include its name in my documents. Microsoft Word spell check never likes the second Wagga. Even though I have included Wagga Wagga in the custom dictionary the error still comes up. What can I do to get it to accept Wagga Wagga? A third matter I asked you about before and I wonder whether there is now a solution. How do you remove US English for all time from Word 2000 so that it never comes up as a default. I try to ensure all my templates are UK English yet still US English sometimes comes up as the spell-checking language. Any ideas? (more…)

I have two computer problems. Firstly, my Windows clock shows the year 2094. In the ‘Control panel’ > ‘Clock’ the day and month are right but not the year. Even when I correct the setting and click on ‘Apply’, the next day it comes back as 2094. How can I make the setting stick for the current year not the year 2094? Secondly, how can I stop my printer printing images which surround a text? Highlighting the text and pressing print does not make any difference. Also, the option to print ‘Selection’ in the print window is never active. I would appreciate any suggestions. I am running a 486 with Windows 95, 32 MB RAM, Netscape 4.7, and Internet Explorer 5.5 (more…)

I use Microsoft Windows 98 with Word 97 and Outlook 97 running on a computer with an Intel Pentium II MMX CPU at 350 MHz. A ‘Screen of Death’ error message appears when shutting down using the ‘Start’ menu but only after I have been using the internet. It does not happen when I shut down having only used programs and not the internet during that session on my computer. The error message is ‘A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0167:BFF8CC04. The current application will be terminated. Press any key to terminate the application. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL again to restart your computer. You will lose any unsaved information in all applications’. When I press a key as instructed in the error message, the error message disappears momentarily and comes back again. After pressing a key for the second time the error message disappears momentarily and comes back again. On the third press of a key the computer finally shuts down. I will appreciate your views on the cause of the problem and how to fix it. (more…)
