Favourite webpages not updating

  • Recently, I changed my ISP and I am having problems with my favourite web pages not updating. I have contacted my ISP who state that this is not their fault. I tried emptying my Temporary Internet Files manually before logging on to ensure that there is nothing on my hard drive. I have checked and double checked to ensure the settings are correct. The frustrating part about it is that it doesn’t effect all web pages. To make sure I am reading the current version I have to press CTRL and ‘Refresh’ at the same time on each web site I visit. I took my system unit to my new ISP’s and hooked it up to a monitor next to one of the ISP’s monitors. The Technician and I typed a web address at the same time and 2 different web pages appeared. On my monitor appeared an old page and on the ISP’s monitor appeared a new page. Presently, I am terminating my account with my new ISP as I believe it is too much of a coincidence for this to happen and they are beginning to think I am a nuisance. Any suggestions?

If you have deleted the Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, and History before you log onto the internet then the problem is not caused by your computer because there is nothing on your computer from which the webpages can be generated. I also occasionally get this problem. Possibly, the problem is due to your ISPs proxy server feeding you old pages. Proxy servers locally store webpages that users request, off the internet. This helps reduce bandwidth costs for the ISP because pages need to be downloaded from the internet. For example, if you go to your favourite website and you are the first person in, say, a few days to access this page, it will be fetched from the internet and then saved to the proxy server. Any subsequent users who want to go to that website will get the webpage that is stored by the proxy server (until the proxy cache has been deleted). This means that if your favourite website is updated while the page is still on the proxy server, the old page will still be displayed. Some ISPs require you to type in the address of the proxy server in your web browser. However, others use transparent proxies which don’t require the user to type in the address but the connection still goes through the proxy. I think that this is your problem. It may not be occurring on the ISPs machines as they may not go through the proxy server. In any case, there is really no way to get around this and I don’t believe the problem is unique to your ISP. Be aware that this is also just a theory. I don’t know who your ISP is or their configuration so this may not be the problem. Ask your ISP about the possibility of the proxy server being the culprit.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
