Resolution slider grayed out

  • In one of your recent articles you helped someone whose computer could only manage to display 16 colours at 640 x 480 resolution when running Windows 98. I have the exact same problem but with Windows 95. Your solutions for Windows 98 did not work for me though. The resolution bar on the settings display is grayed out on 640 x 480 pixels. Can you help?

A reason for this problem could be that you haven’t got the correct video drivers installed on your system. The most difficult thing is to locate the manufacturer and model of your video card. If you have the drivers to your video card on hand, then install the drivers. However, if you do not, you will have to determine the manufacturer and model of the card (if you don’t already know). You have a few options here for working this out. Firstly, go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Settings’ > ‘Control Panel’ and open the ‘System’ control panel. Click the ‘Device Manager’ tab. On this tab, look under ‘Display Adapters’ in the device list to see if your video card is listed there with its model name. If it is, then skip down this answer to locate the drivers. If you cannot find the video card listed, then open the ‘Display’ control panel and click the ‘Settings’ tab. There should be a button at the bottom of the window that reads something like ‘Advanced’ or alike (I am not certain of the labelling in Windows 95). Click the button and another window will open, with information about your display adapter. Click through all the tabs and find the one with the name of your video card. When you find it, if the name is not a match for your video card (eg. ‘Standard VGA Card’ would not be your video card as this is a default Windows name) then continue on. The last option you have to determine the manufacturer and model of your video card, is to open up your computer and to try and read it off the card. Before doing this, make sure that you unplug the computer from the wall and touch the chassis in order to discharge any static from yourself.

Now, after all of that, you should have the manufacturer of your video card or at least the model. Now you will have to find the website of the manufacturer. You can do this by either searching for the manufacturer, model, or model and manufacturer of your video card using a search engine such as www.google.com or www.altavista.com. You should be able to find the drivers for your video card at the manufacturer’s site. If you cannot find the drivers or the manufacturers site, then have a look at www.driverguide.com/ which is a very good site where you can find device drivers. However, if you are stuck and can’t find the device drivers for your video card, please give me another email with your video card details and I will try and find the drivers for you. Likewise, if you cannot find the manufacturer or model of your video card, please let me know also and I will try my best to help. Good luck!

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
