A 10/100 network card has been added to my computer so that I can use the TransACT broadband service. However, this seems to have caused a problem when I start the machine (a HP PIII 800Mhz computer running WindowsME). The system stops during boot-up and shows a Windows Script Host dialogue box with an error message that reads ‘Can not find script file C:WINDOWSTEMPNETNET.JS’. Selecting ‘Cancel’ to continue booting the machine I am presented with a network type logon dialogue box which seems to be related to the script error. I have located a reference to this file in a file titled LFNBK.DAT. Can you tell me how to fix this problem with the script file error and logon box? (more…)

  • Entire Network doesn’t browse network

Two of my computer systems run WindowsMe and a third, older machine, runs Windows 95. All three computers are networked together. I can do IP pings between all the PCs and I can access any shareable folders from any of the three PCs to any shareable resource. However, the ‘Entire Network’ browser doesn’t work on one machine. When I open ‘Network Neighbourhood’ on the Windows 95 machine, all three machines are visible in the window. When I open ‘Entire Network’ I see the network icon labelled with my workgroup name. On one of the WindowsMe machines (being used as the ICS server), when ‘My Network Places’ is opened and then ‘Entire Network’, I also see the network icon labelled with my workgroup and, on opening the network icon, all three computers can be seen. However, on the second WindowsMe machine when I open ‘My Network Places’ then ‘Entire network’ sometimes the machine displays a message saying the network cannot be browsed and on other occasions ‘0 Objects’ is at the bottom of the ‘Entire Network’ window. Any ideas what causes this ? (more…)

  • Unable to switch to video mode 640 x 480

Recently I bought an interactive horse-riding game called ‘Riding Star’ for my daughter. Installation proceeded smoothly but when trying to play the game the following error message appears: ‘Unable to switch to video mode 640 x 480′. Our computer is a Compaq Presario 524CDS, 486 DX4 100 MHz, 4.3gb hard drive and 24mb RAM running Windows 95b. The video adapter chip is Cirrus Logic CL-GD-5424 that has its own driver. Attempts to run the game using a different driver (e.g, Generic VGA) have not been successful, neither has manually changing the screen resolution to 680 x 480. I have not been able to find any updated Windows 95 drivers for this model Cirrus Logic chip. I think I have diagnosed the problem correctly as being with the video adapter not switching to the desired screen resolution. If you have any ideas or fixes for the problem we would be very grateful. (more…)

On starting my computer there is sometimes an error message. This comes up after my desktop appears and all system icons have been displayed. It reads something like ‘Driver memory error: Cannot import file C:WINDOWS.KAK from registry’. Recently, another error has also occurred in addition to the original error. This second error message reads: ‘Driver Memory Error: Kagou-Anti-Kro$oft says not today’. The only option available on this error window is to click ‘Ok’ at which point the computer shuts down. This happened twice before I tried CTRL-ALT-DELETE and chose ‘End Task’ on the error. Since then, the computer has started normally and the error message has not appeared. Hoping you can help. My newly purchased digital camera requires Windows 98 SE. The software that comes with this camera is Adobe Photo Deluxe HE 3.0. As a visual artist, I needed to upgrade from my old digital camera which ran on Windows 95. Can you please advise me how to access in Windows 98 SE all of the photos that I have saved to floppy disks and CDs through Windows 95. I am running a Pentium MMX 200Mhz, 4gb hard drive, and 32mb of RAM. (more…)
