  • Customised Internet Explorer

When I changed ISPs I kept the version of Internet Explorer I had been given by my pervious ISP. This version had been customised by the ISP so that there is a graphic behind the toolbar displaying the ISPs name. This graphic is not a problem. However, periodically a message appears advising that a website is not available and that access is denied by my network administrator and giving the email address of my old ISP. After speaking with my current ISP I have gone through a routine to uncheck the ‘proxy servers’ and ‘automatically detect settings’ options and deleted all cookies. Eventually this gets me onto the web. However, there must be references to my old ISP on the computer as the graphic is still present. Despite searching everywhere I can think of and using regedit to delete reference to my old ISP the problem intermittently reappears every 2 to 3 months. Do you have any ideas how to stop this problem? (more…)

My copy of WordPerfect 9 behaved itself admirably for a year or more and then suddenly developed the habit of giving me a black screen when first opened. Any text is unreadable (as it is black-on-black). I can rectify the problem by going into ‘File’ menu and then selecting ‘Close’ after which everything proceeds normally until the next time WordPerfect is opened. I tried uninstalling WordPerfect Office and then reinstalling software but it makes no difference. I have also explored every option that is on offer in the various menus without finding any cure. Can you offer help? (more…)

However, when the computer reboots the same message appears again. Can you help? I am using Windows 98. (more…)

When playing from audio CDs on my CD-ROM no sound comes through the PC speakers. The CD-ROM works because I can listen to CDs via the headphone jack on the CD-ROM and data CD’s play alright in the CD-ROM. The CD Player software utility works as I can select tracks to play and control the sound from audio CDs coming out of the headphone jack on the CD ROM drive. Finally, the speakers work because there is sound when playing PC games. Do you have any suggestions? If this is relevant, when listening to CDs via the headphone jack on the front of the CD ROM drive, there is no sound from the speakers. Is this a physical disconnection or software controlled?
