Audio CDs on CD-ROM drive

  • When playing from audio CDs on my CD-ROM no sound comes through the PC speakers. The CD-ROM works because I can listen to CDs via the headphone jack on the CD-ROM and data CD’s play alright in the CD-ROM. The CD Player software utility works as I can select tracks to play and control the sound from audio CDs coming out of the headphone jack on the CD ROM drive. Finally, the speakers work because there is sound when playing PC games. Do you have any suggestions? If this is relevant, when listening to CDs via the headphone jack on the front of the CD ROM drive, there is no sound from the speakers. Is this a physical disconnection or software controlled?

This problem can occur if you don’t have an audio cable connected from your CD-ROM drive to your sound card. Inside most computers there are three cables coming out of the CD-ROM drive: a data cable, a power cable, and an audio cable which connects to the soundcard. You need this third audio cable in order to play CD audio through your sound card. Open up your computer (having firstly disconnected it from the powerpoint) and check to see if the cable is present. If it is, then it is probably loose. If the cable is missing, then you will need to buy one from your local computer store. If you describe what the cable is suppose to do, your CD drive, and sound card, they should be able to supply you with the right part. Also, if you are unsure on how to install it, I suggest that you ask them to do it for you. It should only be a five minute job.
