Split file across floppy disks
-
Your column on Monday 20th of August explained how to deal with the Y2K problems with Award and Phoenix BIOS. I had a similar problem, but when I visited the website you advised, there was a message saying the site had been heavily revised and material had been moved or deleted. Can you help? Also when I tried to download the year 2000 upgrade for Windows 95 it was too big for a disk. How can I do this if the computer I want to update does not have direct internet access?
I too noticed that the Phoenix site has been heavily revised when I was originally looking for the Y2K page. I have checked the URL that I gave on the 20th of August, www.phoenix.com/pcuser/year2000/tf-utility.html, and it does still work. I think the reason that you could not get to the website was because you incorrectly typed the address. I tested this theory by purposely typing the wrong URL and I got the same message that you reported. You are correct in saying that Windows 95 upgrade won’t fit onto a disk as the file is 2226k (2.2mb). However, you should be able to span the file across two disks. You can do this by using a utility such as Winsplit which will split the file into two pieces and allow you to put it across two disks. You can download this utility by going to www.download.com and searching for ‘Winsplit’. It is self-explanatory with easy to follow instructions for its operation.
