Webmail addresses displayed as random characters

  • I seem to have a language problem with my BigPond webmail. When I compose an email, I go into the Address Book and click on the intended email address group. The ‘Compose’ window then opens and the address group I previously selected appears in the ‘To:’ field. However, the addresses in the ‘To:’ field are displayed in seemingly random characters of circles, slants, question marks, etc… and thus are unreadable. I know that these characters represent the real addresses as I have printed the page and all the email addresses print out perfectly readable. The problem is that I cannot read them on the screen. The contents of the window at the bottom ‘Priority’ and ‘Request Receipt’ are also in random characters. Conversely, when I type the email in the ‘Message’ text area it shows up ok as plain English. This problem only occurs on my home PC with no such trouble at work. I can read messages in the Inbox and Outbox fine. I have re-installed Internet Explorer but this has not fixed the problem. Any ideas?

This problem is probably related to the encoding you have set in Internet Explorer. On your work computer, open Internet Explorer and go to the ‘Compose’ window in BigPond webmail where you are experiencing problems. Right click in a blank space within this window and select ‘Encoding’ from the context menu, take a note of the active encoding. Next time you are on the internet at home, repeat this procedure up to the point where you have the ‘Encoding’ context menu open. Then, click the encoding which you have active on your work computer. If you cannot see the encoding of your work computer on your home computer, you may have to go to the ‘More’ option which will display more encodings.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
