This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action

  • I use Windows 98 and have received some email attachments with .PPS & .TMP file extensions, however, I am unable to view them. An error/warning message advises: ‘This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. To create an association go to ‘My Computer’, the View menu, and select Folder Options’. I do not have either of these extensions in the file type selections available. Appreciate your advice.

The two file types that are being referenced are Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Show (PPS) and Temporary Files (TMP). I am unsure why you would be sent TMP files as these are usually not of any use and do not have any associated application. On the other hand, the PPS files you are receiving can only be opened if you have Microsoft PowerPoint installed on your computer. As this is not in your File Types list on your computer, it is unlikely that it is installed. However, if you would like to be able to view PowerPoint Slide Shows, you can download the free Microsoft PowerPoint viewer from the Microsoft website at office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Ppview97.aspx.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
