LiveUpdate not updating

  • I have just realised that when I am running Norton AntiVirus LiveUpdate it is actually not updating my virus definition files! I have attempted to reinstall Symantec LiveUpdate and run it several times as recommended, but to no avail. I have just renewed my subscription for 2002 and did not realise until a few months ago that it was not updating, even though LiveUpdate was run on a regular basis. My operating system is Windows 95. Your assistance would be most appreciated.

There could be several reasons for this problem occurring. Be aware that these instructions have been adapted from the Symantec Knowledge Base as I could not provide the URL to this article due to their web page structure. Firstly, I noticed that you sent your question from a Telstra EasyMail account. I also assume that you have a internet account as EasyMail is just for email and could be why you cannot update through LiveUpdate over the internet. Secondly, you could have a lack of hard drive space available. You should have at least 100 MB of hard drive space free to run LiveUpdate. To check this, open ‘My Computer’ on the desktop and then right-click on your hard drive and select ‘Properties’. In the window that appears, click the ‘General’ tab and look for the amount of ‘Free Space’. If you have less than 100 MB, try uninstalling some applications or deleting some files to free up space then try LiveUpdate again. If you have more than 100 MB available, then the problem could be caused by damaged temp files. To remedy this, delete all the temp files on your computer. Go back into My Computer and type ‘%temp%’ (without the quotes) in the address bar followed by pressing the Enter key. You should be able to safely delete the contents of this folder but do so at your own risk. If you are unsure about some files - copy them to a different directory before deleting. Try running LiveUpdate again. A third suggestion is to delete the files in the LiveUpdate Downloads folder. Open ‘Windows Explorer’ and go to the ‘View’ menu and in the window that appears, click the ‘View’ tab. Uncheck the ‘Hide file extensions for known file types’ option and check ‘Show all files’. Click ‘Ok’ and then close Windows Explorer. Go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Find’ > ‘Files or folders’. In the window that appears, select your hard drive from the ‘Look in’ drop down box and ensure that subfolders is ticked. Locate the ‘Search for’ or ‘named’ box type ‘downloads’ (without the quotes) and press the ‘Find now’ or ‘Search now’ buttons. In the search results, look for the folder which ends with LiveUpdate. Double-click that folder and then double-click to open the Downloads folder within. Delete all the files and folders in the LiveUpdateDownloads folder. DO NOT delete the LiveUpdate folder itself, otherwise you will have to reinstall Norton Antivirus. Try running LiveUpdate again. If it still doesn’t work, try reinstalling LiveUpdate. You can find the latest version at www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/lu/lu.html. The next thing to do should the above not fix the problem is to open your web browser and go to liveupdate.symantec.com. You should receive a message saying that you cannot access these files via a web browser. If you don’t, then it could be that your internet connection is not configured correctly. In this case, contact your ISP. If you are still having problems, take a look at service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2001081613132213 which details how to reinstall the subscription files in case they are damaged. Finally, have a look at service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2000121413465213 which shows you how to fix the problem, if it was caused by a failed update of Norton Antivirus.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
