Scanner no longer operates

  • I use Word 2000 and a HP 3.0 scanner with HP Paperport. Recently I inserted an image into a Word Document direct from the scanner. Now when I try to scan documents to Paperport, a message appears advising that my Logitech camera is off-line, and the scanner no longer operates. I would be grateful if you could tell me how to overcome this problem.

The symptoms suggest that another application is accessing your scanner and thus denying Paperport access to your scanner (as it is already in use). Go back into Word and try scanning something else directly into Word as opposed to using Paperport. If this works, then it is almost certain that something else is accessing your scanner and, most probably, it is the application which is used to scan things into Word. Do a CTRL-ALT-DEL to check whether there are any applications running in the background which could be accessing your scanner. If there are any, close them. Another idea is to right-click on ‘My Computer’ on the desktop and click ‘Properties’. In the window that appears, click the ‘Device Manager’ tab. Right-click on the name of your computer (the label at the top of the device ‘tree’) and click ‘Scan for hardware changes’. If your printer is piggy-backed onto your scanner, then sometimes after using the printer you cannot use the scanner as the printer has taken over the parallel port. By following the above procedure, it should allow your scanner access. Now try using Paperport. If all this fails, your best bet would probably be to reinstall the device drivers.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
