The speaker icon that sits in the system tray next to the time display has disappeared from my Windows 98 system. How can I recover this icon? I use it to access the volume control panel. (more…)

I play Bridge over the internet but I am constantly being disconnected (on average 2 or 3 times in an hour) which is very frustrating! A notice appears generally after a period of silence or inactivity which says ‘You have been disconnected by the server’. One site has an auto resume feature which is quite convenient. However, the other server does not and by the time I get back on I have lost my place. Can you help? (more…)

I am using a HP Pavilion 6305 with Windows 98 and Outlook Express 5. Since installing Outlook Express 5 I have encountered a number of problems. When attempting to logon to the internet using Outlook Express the following happens:
1. The Dial-up Connection dialog box does not save ‘connect automatically’.
2. When first opening Internet Explorer, the following message appears: ‘Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site …’. The site was not found. Make sure the address is correct, and try again’.
3. The log-on procedure continues until a dialogue box appears with the message: ‘Logon …’. This appears during the authorizing phase of ‘Send/Receive Messages’.
4. Then I click the X to close both boxes but an Outlook Express box appears with the error message: ‘There was problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was
rejected. Account ‘…’ Server ‘…’. Protocol: POP3. Server Response: ‘-ERR Invalid username/password’. Port: 110, Secure (SSL); No. Server Error: 0×800CCC90, Error Number: 0×800CCC92′. However, I have never used the server it quotes as an ISP. After I click the X to close the box, the system continues to operate normally. I would appreciate your advice. (more…)

The problem is when I open Outlook Express, the list of folders (Outbox, Delete, Inbox, etc…) does not appear on the left-hand side of the screen. What can I do to restore this screen? I have Windows 98. (more…)

Since updating the joystick driver (via an internet download) the joystick buttons and point-of-view hat no longer work. Reconfiguring the joystick via Gaming Options in the Control Panel does not help as it won’t let me configure the buttons, only the axes, throttle and POV Hat. Also, I tried to configure the joystick via the setup option within two different flight simulator games, which show the buttons correctly assigned. Finally, I deleted the updated driver which I downloaded and reverted to my original version by removing the joystick via Gaming Options and then reinstalled the joystick. None of this has worked and I can’t fire the guns nor see different views using the POV Hat. I have Windows 98. Do you have any suggestions that may help? (more…)
