Recovering from Klez virus

  • On 7 May I was attacked five times by the same virus at and all of these originated from the same email address. However when I tried to contact the sender, I was informed that there was no such address. The virus concerned was W32.Klez.gen@mm and came under cover of file 1609_161_small(1).bat with the subject heading of ‘Honey’. Norton Antivirus intercepted the virus each time and placed the file in quarantine. My problem is that since the attack, the formatting of my Word documents has been affected. I don’t know if this is a coincidence, or whether it is a result of the attack. The effect is that all formatting has disappeared and has been replaced by formatting instructions at the end of my text. Is there any way I can recover from this situation?

This problem may be due to your Normal.dot template being corrupted. Normal.dot is the default template which Word uses for most documents. If this is corrupt, then it could be causing your formatting problems. Go into the ‘Windows Explorer’ > ‘Tools’ menu > ‘Folder’ options. In the window that appears, click the ‘View’ tab and enable ‘Show hidden files and folders’. Click OK. Go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Find’ > ‘Files or folders’ and search for ‘normal.dot’ (without the quotes). Once the search has found this file, delete it. Don’t worry, next time you open Word the file will be automatically recreated. Close the find window and re-open Word. The Normal.dot template should have now been recreated. Try opening a document to confirm that the problem has been solved.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
