Torn Quicktime logo

  • I have a couple of problems with my internet. The first relates to downloading. Whenever I try to download a file off the internet, a torn or ripped version of the Quicktime logo appears on my screen after which nothing else seems to work. This is a relatively recent problem, with no previous history. The second problem relates to the downloading of a Webshots Desktop package. A message is displayed ‘Error locating Object Handler’ with a comment that there is no viewer available for the type of object that I am trying to open. I have tried to follow the prompts to download a viewer but the directions and options are not clear so I have now given up on this task. I am not sure if the above problems are related. My PC is a Pentium II 350 with 252 Mb RAM, Windows 98. I use Internet Explorer 5.

Regarding your first problem, I suggest that you try uninstalling Quicktime. If this does not cure the problem, then try reinstalling the latest version of Quicktime. This can be downloaded from www.apple.com/quicktime/. When you reach the page asking you to download, try downloading the Quicktime Standalone Installer which will download the whole Quicktime application to your computer. Once Quicktime has downloaded, try installing it. Then if you are still having problems, you can try the following work around. When downloading a file, instead of left-clicking the file, right-click the file and click ‘Save Target As…’. Regarding your second question about Webshots, from the screen-shot that you emailed me, I think that the problem may be related to your Quicktime problem. The first problem occurred when downloading EXE files and so has the second problem. It seems that for some reason Quicktime wishes to open EXE files, but when it finds that it can’t actually open the file, Quicktime assumes that the file must be corrupted. If you follow the procedures I gave for fixing the Quicktime problem, then this should fix both problems. However, if you are still having problems, please feel free to contact me again.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
