My two computers are a Pentium 4 desktop computer running Windows 2000 and a Toshiba Notebook 430cds running Windows 95. I would like to communicate between the two computers. Windows 95 has a cable direct facility which allows communication by serial or parallel cable. I have the cable but how do I make it communicate with a Windows 2000 machine? (more…)

I am having trouble opening attachments on many emails. A pale yellow message stripe comes up with the paper clip icon in a small grey circle followed by the message, ‘OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail:’ and then provides the name of the attachment. I use Windows XP Home Edition. Your help would be appreciated as I know most of these blocked attachments should be safe to open. (more…)

My computer is a P4 1.7GHz with 256 MB RAM, 80GB hard drive, and a Geforce2 MX 400 video card. Since installing Battlefield 1942 the graphics have been ridiculously choppy, sometimes taking 30 seconds to catch up. The system I am running should be able to handle everything without a problem but it only seems to be getting worse. I have acquired the newest drivers for my video card and latest version of the game and have turned every video and sound option down as low as it will go. The machine is only a few months old and is not overflowing with interfering programs or anything. I turn off my antivirus scanning and any other processes on my toolbar but nothing seems to work. Is there anything I can do to resolve this problem? (more…)

Lately, during start up and shut down, the first and last thing on the screen is a small rectangular box in the centre of the screen incorporating a small round grinning face with the words ’selalu online’. I don’t know how it got there, but more importantly what is it and how do I prevent it from occurring? I am running Windows Me. (more…)

  • Offline, Try again

I subscribe to TransACT broadband at 512 kbps and my operating system is Windows 98 SE. I also have a backup dial-up account with my ISP. Whenever I try to connect to an internet site it tells me I am offline and to click the ‘Try again’ button. When I do this, everything works normally. The ISP advises that Windows 98 cannot recognise third party broadband suppliers and they have sent a Fix.Reg to overcome this problem. This works with some programs but not with Windows Media player (WMP). They also advised that Windows XP will overcome this problem with WMP but I don’t want to buy XP. I have Windows Media Player version 7.01.00.3055 and whenever I click on its shortcut everything on the C Drive loads and works, however the following message appears: ‘Windows Media Player is not configured for the Internet. To connect to the Internet, run the Internet Connection Wizard and then try again’. However this is not possible as no ‘Try again’ box appears. Previously I used Windows Media Player to listen to the radio but now that will not work. This tends to negate the cost of broadband subscription. I have spent too much time and money on uninstalling and reinstalling WMP (download fees) and hot and cold boots. I have tried broadband and dial-up with different ISP’s. All with the same result - no connection to Windows Media Player. My ISP advises the Fix.Reg file rectifies nearly 80% of the WMP problem. I seem to be in the other 20%. Can you help? You answered a similar question, asked by Kevin P, a while ago. (more…)
