Cannot change format of Internet Explorer History display
By skid on January 27, 2003 in Internet and email | No Comments
I wrote in recently as I cannot change the format of my Internet Explorer 5 history display. You replied commenting that the format can be changed by using the ‘View’ button on the history bar. Unfortunately, all I have is the word ‘History’ and the ‘X’ at the top of the history display. I am using Windows 95 and I can’t reinstall Internet Explorer 5 as it is not on the Windows 95 disks. Any other suggestions? (more…)

Unable to identify virus detector, PC-Cillin did not open
By skid on January 27, 2003 in Security and malware | No Comments
My computer is a Compaq Presario 2262 operating Windows 98 and Outlook Express. A couple of months ago I received a virus which necessitated having to reinstall Windows. I also installed PC-Cillin 2000, having previously used McAfee. Now, nearly every time I switch on, the screen is ‘frozen’ and I cannot open any programs and can’t even shut down in the accepted manner. Sometimes if I switch off the computer, by pressing the on/off switch, it behaves normally, but often it is still not right after several off/on attempts. Occasionally, when the Windows desktop first appears on the screen, I get a small message along the lines ‘Unable to identify virus detector, PC-Cillin did not open’. Usually when this appears, everything operates normally, but if it does not appear (nor any other PC-Cillin message) the screen is frozen. Can you help? (more…)

Word documents display text with foreign symbols
By skid on January 27, 2003 in Office | No Comments
I am running Windows 95 on an old computer. Whenever I open a Word document which I have saved, it displays the text interspersed with lots of foreign symbols - sometimes about 5 pages worth. Alternatively, it doesn’t display what I wrote at all but only the foreign symbols. Do you have any suggestions? (more…)

By skid on January 20, 2003 in Specialised software | No Comments
When starting Windows XP the following message appears: ‘Runner Error - Invalid Backweb application id 7288971′. After clicking OK, Windows appears to run normally. What is this application and how can it be deleted? Also, after 20 minutes of ‘inactivity’ (no movement of mouse) my internet connection is terminated. How do I stop this from happening? (more…)

Help files display in incorrect font
By skid on January 20, 2003 in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
Since upgrading from Windows 95 to Windows 98 there is a problem with the Windows Help File. The headings at the top look like stick men (just straight lines branching off at different angles) and the index on the left is in, what appears to be, Greek. The explanation on the right is in English, but this is not much help when trying to search for a particular topic. Unfortunately this problem extends to all programs running under Windows - which means all help files are useless. The only solution I have found is to boot up in the safe mode when the index is in English (but the stick men remain) so this is not an ideal solution. I have tried reinstalling Windows 98 but that did not fix the problem. My computer has 64 MB RAM, a 20G HDD, two Canon bubble jet printers, and a Canon scanner. Please help if you can. (more…)
