After loading Windows it may take 10 reboots before the computer will be up and running. Even then the icons on the desktop sometimes do not appear. Reloading Windows 98 about 5 times has not helped. On the odd occasion the message ‘Cannot locate microsoft.exe’ appears on the screen. Can you please make any suggestions so that I can have the computer working efficiently? Also, if I have computer with Windows 98 in one room and a new computer, with Windows XP, in another room can I use the one Bigpond account to access the internet on both computers (at different times)? Recently, I received an email alerting me about a worm virus called ‘jdbgmgr.exe’. The message goes on to state that the worm virus lies dormant for 14 days and is prefixed by a small grey teddy bear icon. My system is using Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and protected by Norton SystemWorks 2003. However, I have found jdbgmgr.exe on my hard drive! Is this really a worm virus that the Norton Anti-Virus 2003 has not picked up? (more…)

I cannot print certain internet web pages as there seems to be something that stops the user from printing the page. Is there a way around this? Secondly, is there a way of making my computer alert me every second Sunday that something is to be done? I am running Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 6. (more…)

Most times when cold booting (particularly if the computer has been turned off for a long length of time e.g., 4 - 6 hours) the following message appears: ‘While initializing device NTKERN: Windows protection error you need to restart your computer’. I usually restart using CTRL+ALT+DEL and the computer reboots in Safe Mode. Once Windows has loaded I go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Shutdown’ and select ‘Restart’ the computer boots up normally. On occasions I have selected ‘Shutdown’ then immediately powered up again and sometimes the computer powers up normally but most times not. Hope you can be of some assistance. My computer is a P4 1.7 GHz with 256 MB DDR RAM and a 40 GB hard drive running Windows 98 SE. (more…)

A while ago you explained how to remove items from Outlook Express that remain in the mail store files on the hard drive (even after emptying the ‘Deleted Items’ folder). I periodically removed the messages, in accordance with your article, by going to File and then Deleted Items.dbx. However, since I have started using Windows 2000 searching for Deleted Items.dbx does not produce the results it previously did. How can I remove Outlook Express Deleted Items from my hard drive if I am running Windows 2000. (more…)
