Computer freezing

  • My Pentium II with 128MB RAM running Windows 98 often locks up and freezes. How can I solve or fix this problem? Also, are there any ways to speed up this computer?

Lockups and freezes are common problems. Unfortunately, they are hard to diagnose and fix. The problem could be due to any number of factors: ranging from a specific program to a problem with Windows. You could try incrementally closing any open programs (including those running in the background) to see if you can narrow down the problem. However, probably the best solution would be to backup your data and do a clean install of Windows. Over the years after installing and uninstalling different applications, a certain amount of junk accumulates in the Windows registry and in various directories. When you notice that your computer is frequently crashing or is not performing to its peak then generally reinstalling Windows will speed up the computer. Another possibility is a shortage of RAM. However, as your computer seems to be rather old (in ‘computer years’) you might consider whether or not to spend money upgrading your existing machine or to save your pennies for a new machine when you feel the need for speed!

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
