Computer boots into sleep mode

  • When my computer is turned on it goes straight into sleep mode. The machine is a Pentium II running Windows 98 SE. Can you help?

Firstly, we will need to check the Windows power management settings. I assume that you are able to ‘wake-up’ your computer after it goes into sleep mode. Go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Settings’ > ‘Control Panel’ and open the ‘Power Management’ control panel. Check that the settings which dictate when your monitor etc.. turn off, are set to a reasonable amount of time (e.g., not 1 minute). Try completely disabling power management by setting all your power management options (e.g., ‘System standby’) to ‘Never’. Click OK and then reboot your computer to see if the problem persists. If it does, then signs are pointing to a problem with your BIOS’s power management configuration. The best way to deal with this issue is to simply disable your BIOS power management features. To do this, you will need to enter the BIOS setup. You do this by pressing a specific key (e.g., F8) during the computer power-on self test (when all the memory tests etc’¦ take place). A message will be displayed like ‘Press F8 to enter setup’ telling you what key to press. Press the key when this message is displayed. A setup screen will appear. You will need to locate the advanced power management setup and then disable power management. Be very careful, as you can cause major problems for your computer if you accidentally change a setting. If you are not confident, I suggest you find someone else who is more knowledgeable on these matters to attempt the procedure. Once you have disabled power management in the BIOS, the computer should not go into sleep mode after booting.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
