Ghosting

  • Recently I purchased a Pentium 600 MHz computer to replace a Pentium II running Windows 98. Is it possible to save all the information on my current hard drive and transfer this onto the hard drive of the new computer? I have heard that there is a program called ‘Ghost’

The program you refer to is Norton Ghost (www.symantec.com.au/region/au_nz/product/ghost/ghost_pe/). This software creates an ‘image’ of your hard drive. You can then store this image onto a hard drive or removable media. However, you will need removable media with a decent capacity (e.g., CD-R) in order to store an image which contains all the information on your hard drive. Another software package which can also create images is PowerQuest Drive Image (www.powerquest.com/driveimage/). A good use of imaging software is for a clean install of your operating system; install all your applications and drivers, then take an image of your drive and store it on CD. You then have the backup of a ‘perfect system’ on CD. So, next time you want to clean house and do a complete Windows reinstall you just need to unpack the image onto your hard drive.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
