Currently I have two computers, one running Windows 95 and the other running Windows 2000 Professional. Is there a simple way to transfer files (documents, not program files) from the Windows 95 computer to the Windows 2000 computer, apart from copying the files to disk? I have purchased a 2m serial laplink cable but am unsure how to use the cable. Can you help? (more…)

I purchased The Saddle Club - Willowbrook Stables. When clicking the ‘Play Game’ button the following error message appears: ‘Unable to initialise trace logging’. The explanation on the manufacturer’s website is ‘There is no space on the hard disk. You are trying to run the game from a CD. Run the game from the computer while the CD is in the drive’. Now that I understand the problem, how do I run the game with the CD in the drive? After clicking the OK button an error appears ‘SADDLECLUB caused an invalid page fault in module SADDLECLUB.EXE’. The computer is a Pentium III 650 MHz with a 20 GB hard drive (10 GB free). (more…)

Upon opening Internet Explorer (using an ADSL broadband connection) a blank page appears for about 2 - 3 minutes before the website address appears. After another 1 - 2 minutes the website content appears. This also occurs when changing from one website to another. I have checked the LAN connection and proxy server settings. On a different matter, I have attempted to install an infrared connection, for my digital camera. After inserting the Windows ME CD (for the driver installation) an error message appeared saying the file cannot be found. Manually copying the file resulted in the computer only booting in Safe Mode. Deleting the file returned the computer to normal. Another problem is security patches downloaded from WindowsUpdate will not install. Is the problem the Windows ME CD, or is my hard drive corrupted? (more…)

A file with the name ‘~’ persistently appears on my desktop, and no matter how often it’s deleted, the file reappears after a short period. I don’t know whether this problem is doing any harm but it is annoying and probably an indication that something in the system is not quite right. How do I rid the file permanently from my desktop? The computer is a Pentium III and running Windows 98 SE. (more…)
