Window moves off screen

  • Recently when I opened MSN Messenger screen and clicked on a name so that I could send a message, the window rapidly went to the left hand side of the screen and disappeared. I decided to run Disk Defragmenter which suffered the same fate. The windows are on the task bar, but when the task bar button, for the program, is clicked the window rushes off the screen. Can you help?

This problem may be caused by the window being placed off the viewable screen at a previous point in time and Windows has remembered the window placement. So, each subsequent time you open the application it is off the side of the screen. To bring the window back into the viewable portion of your desktop, start by clicking on the task bar button for the problem program (e.g., Disk Defragmenter or MSN Messenger). The window should rush off the screen. Make sure that the window is still active (i.e., the task bar button for that program is still depressed) and then press ALT-SPACE. You may see a context menu appear (but it doesn’t matter if you don’t). Then press the M key. Now, use the arrow buttons on your keyboard to move the window back into a viewable position. Once you have finished, press ENTER. Now, hopefully, Windows should remember the new position of the window each subsequent time you use the application.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
