When surfing some internet sites Internet Explorer 4 produces an error: ‘Script error. Line 298 Char 1. Error: Object doesn’t support this property or method. Do you want to continue running scripts?’. Occasionally a Kernel32 also appears. This occurred subsequent to updating Windows from a patch that I received from Microsoft via email. The computer is running Windows 98. (more…)

Whenever opening iTunes a message appears that ‘The iTunes Music Library file cannot be read because it does not appear to be a valid library file’. Reinstalling the application does not fix the problem. I do use other programs such as Windows Media Player and Winamp to play music, but am unsure if they could be the cause. The computer is a Pentium 1.6 GHz computer with 256 MB RAM running Windows XP Home Edition. (more…)

Recently Norton Antivirus 2004 quarantined and deleted a virus. The next day I was unable to open an email attachment using Microsoft Word and a message appeared saying resources were dangerously low. Following this message the computer froze. Rebooting the computer did not resolve the issue. After using System Restore, to rollback the computer, Word still does not open. Word starts to open, but then freezes. Internet Explorer and Outlook Express work perfectly. Should I uninstall and reinstall Word? I am a novice and do not know whether that would affect all My Documents files. The computer is running Windows ME. (more…)

I am having problems setting up a home network consisting of two Windows Me machines and two Windows XP machines. One of the Windows Me machines is the server and has two network cards, one connected to a switch and the other to broadband. The Windows Me machines will network (share files, printers and the broadband internet connection within the workgroup) but not the XP PCs. I have manually specified the IP address of each PC. There are three possible problems: (1) Windows XP won’t communicate with Windows ME; (2) I’m using Ethernet cables instead of “crossover” cables (what’s the difference?); or (3) a firewall somewhere is preventing communication. I’m hesitant to change from Windows ME to XP because I hear that it can be quite involved. Please help! (more…)

My computer is a Pentium II 233 MHz with 256 MB RAM and 20 GB hard drive running Windows ME. Recently when my computer boots the CPU speed is displayed as 133MHZ and on one occasion was displayed as 166MHZ. It runs very slow at these times, however, if I reboot, it occasionally corrects itself. If the CPU needs replacing can a 350 MHz CPU be fitted without causing any other problems, or should I stay with a 233 MHz? (more…)
