Add items to Send To menu
By skid on May 31, 2004 in Tip of the Week | No Comments
When right-clicking on most icons a ‘Send To >’ item will appear in the context-menu. You can add your own items to the Send To menu. For example, you may wish to add a shortcut to the Recycle Bin in ‘Send To’. So whenever you right-click an icon and select ‘Send To > Recycle Bin’ that icon (which may be a shortcut, file or folder) will be put in the Recycle Bin. Shortcuts may be added to the ‘Send To’ list by opening the ‘Send To’ folder. Go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Run’ and type ’sendto’ (without the quotes) and click OK. If you are interested, the Send To folder is located at ‘C:WindowsSendTo’ in Windows 9xMe and at ‘C:Documents and Settings
SendTo’ in Windows XP. (more…) -
Internet Explorer default homepage changing
By skid on May 31, 2004 in Internet and email | No Comments
Each time Internet Explorer is started, the default homepage changes. If I restore the homepage this does not stick the next time I open Internet Explorer. Additionally, when visiting some websites I am redirected to different pages. Spybot and Ad-Aware found and deleted suspicious files, but the problem persists. I downloaded and ran Spy Hunter which highlighted problems in the Windows registry as being ’severe’. The computer is running Windows XP Home Edition with 80 GB and 512 MB RAM. Can you help? (more…)

Changing the default Save As location in Word
By skid on May 24, 2004 in Tip of the Week | No Comments
The first time you save or open a document in a Microsoft Word session, the ‘Save As’¦’ dialog and the ‘Open’ dialog boxes generally default to the current user’s ‘My Documents’ folder. This can be a hassle, especially if all your documents are kept in a different location (or sub-folder within ‘My Documents’). To change the default location for opening and saving Word documents, open Word and go to the ‘Tools’ menu > ‘Options’. In the window that appears, click the ‘File Locations’ tab. In the ‘File locations’ box select ‘Documents’ and click ‘Modify’¦’. (more…)

Internet Explorer not downloading images
By skid on May 24, 2004 in Internet and email | No Comments
Out of the blue my Internet Explorer 6 browser has decided to be selective about which images to download. Some web pages display fine, while for others the images do not download at all, or it downloads a few images and not others. Some pages also seem to have odd text formatting, too. But there is no particular pattern that I can discern; seems quite random. I thought it may have been a problem with Norton Internet Security, so I uninstalled and reinstalled NIS and also disabled ad-blocking - but the images problem persists. The computer is running Internet Explorer 6. (more…)

Recently a new hard drive was installed into my computer. How can I install the old hard drive into the computer so that I can access this drive through Windows? What cables, jumper settings, and BIOS changes are needed? The computer is running Windows 98, but I am considering upgrading to Windows NT. (more…)
