Uninstall entry still in Add/Remove Programs

  • Although I uninstalled a game using the uninstall utility located in the game’s program group on the Start menu, the uninstall link is still present in the ‘Add/Remove Programs’ control panel. When attempting to uninstall the game through ‘Add/Remove Programs’ the size of the game grew from 660 MB to well over 1.5 GB! There are no references to the game on the hard drive, so it must have been deleted from the disk but the reference in Add/Remove Programs was not removed.

You are correct in assuming the reference in Add/Remove Programs was not removed. I have also encountered situations where this has occurred and other situations where the program size reported in Add/Remove Programs was incorrect. It appears you are experiencing both situations! You can remove the reference to the game from the Add/Remove Programs list through the registry. Go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Run’ and type ‘regedit’ (without the quotes) and click OK. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall. Now expand the ‘Uninstall’ key and you will notice lots of keys (they look like folders) branching from Uninstall. Each of these keys represents one item in Add/Remove Programs. Locate the key for the game, select the key and press DEL to delete the key. Close the Registry Editor. Look in Add/Remove Programs and you will notice the entry for the game has been removed.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
