$NtUninstallKB… folders
-
In the Windows directory there are 26 folders with names like ‘$NtUninstallKB810217$’. These folders appear to be related to updates for Windows XP, Internet Explorer and/or Outlook Express (as the end of each folder’s name corresponds with an update reference number). There is no apparent reason to uninstall any of these updates. Is it safe to delete these ‘uninstall’ folders? If so, should I delete these via Windows Explorer, or go through the Add or Remove Programs function in Control Panel, where the list of currently installed programs includes entries like ‘Windows XP Hotfix - KB810217′ and similar. I am concerned if I go the latter route, this will uninstall the updates rather than just removing the uninstall folders.
You are correct is saying that these folders contain the uninstall information for all Windows patches/updates which have been installed. It is possible you may wish to remove one of these updates/patches in the future, for example due to a problem with new hardware or software which is installed (albeit, this is very unlikely). So, if you are certain that you will not need to remove these updates in the future then you can safely delete these folders in the Windows directory. Once you have done this, if you try to remove the updates using Add/Remove Programs, you will receive an error notifying you that uninstall data is not present, and you will be given the opportunity to remove the entry from your Add/Remove Programs list. You cannot remove the uninstall data through the Add/Remove Programs control panel, as all that will happen is this will uninstall the update itself.
