The connection has limited or no connectivity
-
My computer is on a local network running Windows XP Home Edition. After installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 the following message appears on Windows bootup: ‘The connection has limited or no connectivity’. How do I fix this problem?
This is a relatively common problem after installing Windows XP Service Pack 2. If you are not having any problems with network connectivity, then you can ignore this error message as Windows XP is falsely reporting due to limited or no connectivity. The reason this is happening under Service Pack 2 is because Service Pack 2 creates a new setting to enable such alert messages. To disable this setting so the messages are no longer displayed, go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Control Panel’ and open the ‘Network Connections’ control panel. Right-click on your Local Area Network connection and select ‘Properties’. Click the ‘General’ tab and untick ‘Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity’. Click OK.
On the other hand, if you do have network connectivity problems, visit the Microsoft Knowledge Base article support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=884020 and download the update available from this website. Should you continue to have problems, if you are running your network through a router, try restarting the device to rebuild the configuration information within the router, as this may have become corrupted after the installation of Service Pack 2 on the machine. As this is a relatively new issue I would be interested to have your feedback on whether these suggestions fix the problem.
