Latest graphics drivers stop games working
-
Recently I downloaded and installed the latest drivers (at the time, version 61.76) for my NVIDIA GeForce FX5600 128 MB video card. After installing the update a variety of computer games (both new and old) no longer work correctly. During game introduction movies the graphics and sound would stutter excessively and the title screens would not appear. The game would black out, freeze or the computer would close the game. All of the games I tested worked previous to installing the update. I uninstalled the update and reverted to an earlier driver. Is it possible to use the new driver without these problems? The computer is running Windows ME.
While updated video drivers are generally held to improve performance/features of your video card, as you have discovered, occasionally the opposite can happen. I don’t know why this is happening in your case, but in my experience when such effects happen after installing updated drivers you should definitely roll-back to the old drivers. At the time of writing, the NVIDIA drivers are up to version 66.94. You could try installing these latest drivers, to see if the problem continues with this version. However, if you are happy with the performance of your existing drivers (and they are performing better than the updated drivers) then I suggest you stay with the version you are currently using.
