DOS Command Prompt shortcuts

  • While the Windows GUI makes most operations easy, the DOS Command Prompt is still a very useful tool for doing command-line operations. There are also many options you can customise for the command-prompt. Find the shortcut for the Command Prompt (in Windows XP, it can be found under the ‘Start’ menu > ‘All Programs’ > ‘Accessories’) then right-click on the shortcut and select ‘Properties’. In the window that appears, there are options such as the Screen Buffer Size (on the Layout tab) which allows you to define the number of lines displayed (and also the amount of scroll-back). On other tabs you can also customize the colours, command history buffer, etc’¦
