Installing Windows Personal Web Server
By skid on June 27, 2005 in Internet and email | No Comments
I need to install Windows Personal Web Server (PWS) on my computer running Windows 98 SE, so I can work through some tutorials for Dreamweaver MX. When attempting to install PWS, two error messages appear:
- An unknown error occurred while making MTS specific changes to the system registry. Error code 0×80004005.
- Set up of Transaction Server Core Components failed. The specific error code is 0xfee 670. Setup will continue but the component may not work properly.
The PWS installation continues, but I am not sure if these errors are going to cause problems later down the track. How can I correct these errors? Secondly, the PWS installation created a default root directory at ‘C:Inetpubwwwroot’. I put a single file into that directory, and I can open the file in Internet Explorer by double-clicking the file. However, my understanding is you should be able to view the file by pointing my browser to http://localhost/mytestfile.htm or 127.0.0.1/mytestfile.htm. However, this doesn’t work, instead returning a message ‘The web page you requested is not available offline. To view the page click Connect’. After connecting to my ISP, a web page appears saying ‘Access control configuration prevents your request from being allowed at this time’. (more…) -
Ad-Aware freezing

As a result of your advice I have installed Spybot and Ad-Aware. However, Ad-Aware will not complete scanning my computer. The scan always stops after 65,000 objects are scanned. I read on a website that the CoolWebSearch Trojan can prevent Ad-Aware from running correctly, and it was suggested to download and run CWShredder. Following that advice I downloaded and ran CWShredder and this removed several alleged nasties, but Ad-Aware will still not run. The computer is running Windows 98. (more…)

Do you want to revert to the saved file?
By skid on June 27, 2005 in Office | No Comments
When attempting to open a Word file by double-clicking the file in Windows Explorer, Word opens with the message ‘Do you want to revert to the saved file?’. A similar problem occurs when double-clicking to open Excel files, with a message appearing ‘
is already open. Reopening it will cause any changes you made to be discarded. Do you want to reopen ?”. This does not occur with other file types (e.g. JPEG, TXT) and it also doesn’t occur if I open Word or Excel, and then use the ‘File’ > ‘Open’ function. The computer is running Office 97 on Windows 98 SE. (more…) -
Additional security?
By skid on June 27, 2005 in Security and malware | No Comments
Recently I purchased a Medion laptop computer running Windows XP. The computer is protected by eTrust Antivirus and is running the standard Windows Internet Connection Firewall, with Windows automatic updates enabled. I notice that you recommend using Ad-Aware and Spybot to clean spyware from the computer, and ZoneAlarm as firewall protection. Am I well protected running my current software, or should I download these recommended programs (and would they cause any conflicts with the existing software on my computer)? (more…)

Picture alignment in Word
By skid on June 27, 2005 in Office | No Comments
When inserting or pasting pictures into Word documents, I often like the picture to be ’square’ aligned, so the text wraps around the image. By default, Word pastes pictures into documents in-line, meaning they take up an entire line (just like text). To change the default alignment for inserted pictures, open Word and go to the ‘Tools’ menu > ‘Options’. In the window that appears, click the ‘Edit’ tab. Find the setting ‘Insert/paste picture as’ and change this to your desired paste method. (more…)
