Cordless mouse low battery warning

  • Recently my original cordless mouse (which plugged into the PS/2 port) ceased to operate so I replaced it with a Microsoft Optical Corded Mouse, which is also plugged into the PS/2 port. However, a low battery warning related to the original cordless mouse appears in the upper right hand corner of the screen every few minutes. I have tried connecting the new mouse to a USB port instead (using the included PS/2 to USB adapter) but the low battery warning still appears. How do I stop the low battery warning from appearing? The computer is running Windows XP Home Edition.

This problem is because you still have the drivers (and any associated software) from the original cordless mouse installed. Since the original mouse is no longer connected to the computer, the drivers/software is getting false signals saying the device is low on battery. To fix this problem, we firstly need to uninstall any software which is associated with the old mouse. Go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Control Panel’ and open the ‘Add or Remove Programs’ control panel. Look through the list of programs to find and uninstall any program(s) which are related to the old cordless mouse. Once this is done, we should also check which drivers are installed for the mouse. Go back to the Control Panel and open the ‘System’ control panel (you may need to click ‘Performance and Maintenance’ if the control panel is displayed in Category view). In the window that appears, click the ‘Hardware’ tab and the ‘Device Manager’ button. Expand ‘Mice and other pointing devices’. Check the name of the mouse which is installed. If it is something generic like ‘HID-Compliant mouse’ that is fine. However, if the name refers specifically to the name of the original cordless mouse, right-click on the device and select ‘Update Driver’¦’ to search for a better driver for the device. If the new mouse came with a driver CD, you should insert the CD and point the driver update wizard to the location of the CD to install the drivers.
