Cannot find the file hh.exe
-
When attempting to open Help files, the following message appears: ‘Cannot find the file hh.exe (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all the required libraries are available’. The computer is running Windows 98 SE.
As you have discovered the hh.exe file is related to the Microsoft Windows Help (www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/hh). This file seems to be missing from your computer. So, we will need to restore the file from another location. You should be able to extract this file from your original Windows 98 CD and then put the file back into its original location (which should be the C:Windows directory). Fortunately, there is a good utility called the System File Checker which can be used to extract files from the compressed CAB archives contained on the Windows CD. Put your Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM drive. If the CD automatically loads any programs, close the program the CD launches. Go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Run’ and type ’sfc’ (without the quotes) and click OK. The System File Checker window should appear. Enable ‘Extract one file from installation disk’ and type the filename:
hh.exe
Click the ‘Start’ button. The ‘Extract File’ window will now appear. Click the ‘Browse’ button next to the ‘Restore from’ field and browse to your CD-ROM drive (which contains the Windows 98 CD) and select the win98 directory. The ‘Restore from’ field should now have the value:
D:win98
NB: the drive letter, D in the example above, may be different depending on your system configuration. In the ‘Save file in’ field, type:
C:WINDOWS
Now, click the ‘OK’ button. You may be prompted to save a backup of the file (in which case, note the location of the backup and click OK). The file should be extracted. Restart your computer and check whether the problem continues. If this procedure did not fix the problem, go back into the SFC utility and on the main screen enable ‘Scan for altered files’ and click ‘Start’. This will scan the entire Windows installation for any corrupt files and replace them if found. Hopefully, this should include replacing the corrupt hh.exe file.
