Line numbering in Word
By skid on April 24, 2006 in Tip of the Week | No Comments
When writing long documents or reports in Word, having a way to refer back to particular lines in the document can be useful. While Word does display the current line and column number in the status bar, displaying the line number alongside each line in the document can make identifying particular lines easier. To enable the display of line numbers in Word, go to the ‘File’ menu > ‘Page Setup’. In the window that appears, click the ‘Layout’ tab. Click the ‘Line Numbers’ button and tick ‘Add line numbering’. Click OK and then click OK again. (more…)

Disable email preview in Outlook
By skid on April 24, 2006 in Office | No Comments
I recently changed from using Outlook Express to Outlook 2003 for email. When using Outlook Express I could read and highlight messages in the list of emails without reading the message. This allowed me to delete messages without opening the message. However, in Outlook whenever I select a message the message content is displayed in the right-hand pane of the Outlook window. How can I disable this in Outlook? The computer is running Windows XP Professional with Office 2003. (more…)

When I attempt to uninstall IncrediMail through the ‘Add/Remove Programs’ control panel a message appears saying ‘Invalid INSTALL.LOG file’ and the program will not uninstall. The IncrediMail program is big, so I would rather remove the program than have it lying around. (more…)

Import individual email folders

In a recent column you published a procedure for transferring email between computers, but unfortunately the instructions did not work when I attempted to transfer the Outlook Express email from my desktop computer to my laptop. I copied the files (ArchivesIn.dbx and ArchivesOut.dbx) to be transferred to my laptop onto a USB flash drive, and then plugged the flash drive into the laptop and proceeded to import the messages into Outlook Express through the ‘File’ menu > ‘Import’ > ‘Messages’. When prompted, I selected to import the messages from a mail store directory, and specified the flash drive as the directory containing the mail files. However, a message appeared saying ‘No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open’. I also attempted copying the files to a local directory on the hard drive, and then repeated the procedure, but this did not work either. How can I transfer the email? (more…)
