Date modified of copied files

  • When saving files and folders to CD using the Windows XP CD Burning feature, the date created and date modified fields of the copies are changed to the date they were copied. How do I preserve the original dates? The computer is running Windows XP Home.

Unfortunately this is the method Windows uses to copy files around disks. When you copy a file, a new file is created and the data is then inserted into that file. So, the created date of the copied file will be the current date and time since, technically, the file was created when the file was copied. As far as I am aware, there is no method to get around this in Windows. However, you may be able to find other CD burning software which can work around this issue. In my experience, I have used software such as Sonic RecordNow to copy data from my hard drive to CDs, and by using this software the original creation date of the files is retained. So, you may wish to explore some third-party CD writing software. I recommend having a look at the Sonic website (www.sonic.com) and also the Nero website (www.nero.com). In either case, try downloading the available trial software to see whether it meets your needs before committing to a purchase.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
