Slow computer startup
By skid on November 13, 2006 in Windows XP | No Comments
From power-on until the computer is ready for use takes between 2 - 4 minutes, which is very slow! I have used several housekeeping programs on the computer, such as PC Bugdoctor. Also, every few weeks I clear the Temporary Files (by deleting all files in the %temp% directory), run Disk Cleanup, use the Check Disk facility, run a complete antivirus check, and run Ewido to scan for any malware. I also complete the Disk Defragmenter about twice a year. However, these have not been able to speed-up the computer. Interestingly, when running Norton Antivirus despite deleting the temporary files it still scans thousands of ‘Temporary Internet Files’. Why is this happening? Once the computer finally starts I find the speed acceptable, but it is just the wait at the beginning which is becoming tiresome. How can I speed up the computer? Also, the Yahoo 7 toolbar has installed itself on the computer. I don’t want this toolbar, so can you advise how to remove this item? The computer is running Windows XP Home Edition (patched to Service Pack 2) on a Dell Dimension 2400 2.4 GHz. (more…)

“No to All” option
By skid on November 6, 2006 in Tip of the Week | No Comments
When completing file operations in Windows, a message may appear asking you what you wish to do. For example, if you are copying a file and there is already a file with the same name in a directory, a message will appear asking whether you wish to overwrite that file. You will notice four options are presented: Yes, Yes to All, No and Cancel. Note there is no ‘No to All’ option. So, if you didn’t want to overwrite any files in the directory you would need to click the ‘No’ option on every message that appears. Fortunately, there is an easier way. If you hold the SHIFT key and press ‘No’ in one of the messages, this will be interpreted as ‘No to All’. So, all other messages that would appear will automatically be interpreted as ‘No’. (more…)

Advantages of upgrading to Windows XP
By skid on November 6, 2006 in Windows XP | No Comments
Could you outline the advantages of upgrading from Windows 98 to Windows XP? I have a Pentium 4 computer with 256 MB RAM and use it only for e-mails, internet (broadband), word processing and digital photos. How will we be disadvantaged if we don’t change, and would we be better off buying a new computer? (more…)

My new laptop is running Windows XP Professional. The hard drive has been configured with two partitions: C and D. I would like to keep the C partition for system files, and move applications files to the D partition. Is there anyway I can move the ‘My Documents’ folder to partition D? (more…)
