There is a fantastic extension for Mozilla Firefox which contains this exact feature. FireFTP is an extension which will provide an FTP client within Firefox. Transferring programs to new comptuer

From time to time I purchase and download software online. I am thinking of purchasing a new computer and am wondering how I will move these applications to the new machine? On most occasions I have deleted the temporary installation files (e.g. setup.exe) after installing the software. So, can I just copy the contents of the ‘Program Files’ directory to the new computer? The current computer is running Windows XP SP2. (more…)

Windows XP drivers for PCMCIA network card

Recently my old Gateway laptop computer was upgraded from Windows Me to Windows XP. Unfortunately, the PCMCIA network card no longer functions. When inserted, Windows XP identifies the card as an ‘iPort 10/100_Ethernet_Card’ and loads the hardware driver installation wizard. However, Windows is unable to find a driver for the card and asks for the driver CD to be inserted. After numerous enquiries around Canberra, and searching of the internet, I have only been able to find drivers for Windows 98 and Windows ME, and I suspect there have been no Windows XP drivers developed for the card. In the absence of a Windows XP specific driver, is there any way to make the card work under Windows XP? The card is a BroMax iPort 10/100M Ethernet Card. (more…)

Security Center is disabled

When running a Spybot Search & Destroy scan a message appears saying the Security Center is disabled. Although I click ‘Fix the Problem’ to resolve the issue, the same message appears during the next scan. On entering the Security Center a message says the service has not started or was stopped, and the option to change the way Security Centre alerts is greyed-out. How can I make sure Security Centre is enabled? (more…)
