NVIDIA TwinView window is not responding

  • Occasionally when shutting down the computer a message appears saying that the NVIDIA TwinView window is not responding. To shut down the computer properly I need to click the ‘End Task’ button. What is ‘TwinView’ and how can I stop it interrupting the Windows shutdown process? The computer only has one monitor, so I wonder whether I even need TwinView.

As you have implied, the TwinView software is designed to support multiple monitors on a single video card and graphics processing unit (GPU). You can find more information on TwinView at: www.nvidia.com/object/feature_twinview.html . Returning to your question, since you only have one monitor connected to your computer TwinView isn’t doing much for the computer except causing problems on shutdown. When researching your question, I found that other users have experienced similar problems, and there are a few methods which can be used to resolve the issue. First, download the latest drivers for your video card. If your video card was made by a specific manufacturer, you should first visit the manufacturer’s website to see if they have released any drivers specifically for their implementation of the video card. If not, then you should visit the NVIDIA website (www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp) and download the latest generic NVIDIA drivers for the video card model.

Should installing the latest video drivers not resolve the issue, the next option is disabling TwinView. Since you only have one monitor, disabling this function should not cause any negative side-effects. The exact procedure to disable TwinView depends on the particular drivers you have installed, but you should be able to find the option by going to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Control Panel’ and open the ‘Display’ control panel (you may need to first select the ‘Appearance and Themes’ category). In the window that appears, click the ‘Settings’ tab and the ‘Advanced’ button. In the Advanced options there should be settings pertaining to NVIDIA functions such as TwinView. Once you have found an option for TwinView, disable the feature. Click OK to save and close, then restart the computer.
