When running third-party disk diagnostic tools the following message appears: ‘D:_restore{83617877-D584-44D1-A853A8A07519} is corrupt and unreadable. Please run Chkdsk utility”. Running the Chkdsk utility on the D drive produces a message that Chkdsk cannot run on RAW data. How can I repair or remove the corrupt file?
The directory which the diagnostic tool is detecting as being corrupt is the Windows System Restore directory for the D drive. This stores the System Restore data for Windows, in case you need to roll-back the computer to a previous state. To uphold the integrity and security of the restore data (i.e. to ensure nothing can modify the data) Windows has some pretty tough security on the System Restore directory, including not allowing the user or any programs to access the directory. So, the disk diagnostic tool cannot access the directory and is therefore assuming the directory is corrupt. In this case, you do not need to worry and should be able to safely ignore the message.
You mention that you have run the Chkdsk utility on the drive and an alert appears advising that Chkdsk cannot run on a RAW formatted drive. I don’t quite understand why this message appears, since it generally indicates the entire drive has become corrupt. However, as you have not mentioned otherwise, I assume that the data on the drive is accessible and there is nothing untoward. If this assumption is true, you should be able to ignore this message as well. That said, it is likely something to do with the operating system the computer is running. In your question you did not mention which operating system is running on the computer (e.g. Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP), so if you would like to forward me this information I should be able to provide additional advice on the true nature of the message provided from the Chkdsk utility.
