Boot from CD. NTLDR is missing. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart
By skid on October 15, 2007 in Windows XP | No Comments
There are two small problems with my computer. First, when I open Microsoft Word the following message always appears: ?Microsoft Visual Basic. The Macros in this project are disabled. Please refer to the online help or documentation of the host application to determine how to enable macros?. When I click OK the message closes and Word appears to function correctly. How can I stop this message from appearing? Second, I have a Maxtor One Touch external drive connected to the computer via USB. I like to leave this plugged into the computer, and when I start the computer the following message appears: ?Boot from CD. NTLDR is missing. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart?. The same error occurs when I have a USB flash drive plugged into the USB port or leave a CD inserted in the CD drive. From the sound of the message, it seems that the computer is trying to boot from these devices. How can I stop the computer from attempting to boot from USB and CD on startup? (more…)

Office 2007 default save location
By skid on October 8, 2007 in Tip of the Week | No Comments
The default save location in Word 2007 is the My Documents folder. However, if you save your documents to a different location this default setting is not helpful. Fortunately, you can change the default save location. To do this, click the Office button and then click the “Word Options” button at the bottom of the menu. In the window that appears, click “Advanced” and within the “General” section (near the bottom of the window) click the “File Locations” button. In the “File types” list, select “Documents” then click the “Modify” button. Find your new default save location and then click OK. Back in the File Locations window click OK to close, and then in the Word Options window click OK to save and close. The default save location will now be the newly defined location. (more…)

Email does not automatically send in Outlook
By skid on October 8, 2007 in Internet and email | No Comments
When sending an email using Outlook 2002 the message goes into the Outbox and does not transmit until I click the ?Send/Receive? button. How can I make the messages immediately send after clicking the “Send” button? This may have something to do with the fact that I previously clicked Work Offline in Outlook and I now find that I cannot untick this option, and a message appears saying “One or more parameter values are not valid”. The computer is running Windows XP. (more…)

Computer restarts when printing Visio document
By skid on October 8, 2007 in Office | No Comments
My computer restarts whenever printing a Word document that contains a Visio drawing to a network HP LaserJet 4250 printer, and this same problem occurs with all other computers on the network as well. If I remove the drawing the document prints without problem, and the document also prints on a different printer without any issues. The computers are running Windows XP SP2. (more…)

Firefox not downloading files
By skid on October 2, 2007 in Windows XP | No Comments
Recently I completed a clean installation of Windows XP and installed the latest versions of Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird for web browsing and email. However, I have now noticed that Firefox will not download any PDF, WMV, JPG, or GIF files. After right-clicking on a link and selecting “Save Link As” I selected the location where I would like to save the file but nothing happens. The Download Manager window does not even appear, despite the Download Manager being enabled. If I open the Download Manager window through the “Tools” menu > “Downloads” the list is empty. Reinstalling Firefox does not resolve the issue, nor does installing the newest version of Firefox (as an update was available between the time of the original installation and the problem). There is no problem copying and pasting the link into Internet Explorer to download the file. Even more strange is that I can download EXE files, but the Download Manager window still does not appear. (more…)
