ClipboardFusion
By skid on May 19, 2008 in Tip of the Week | No Comments
Following on from a Tip of the Week published a few weeks ago, about pasting text into Word without formatting, a reader has suggested another method to remove formatting from pasted text. Andrew from Jerrabombera recommends a free utility called ClipboardFusion (www.binaryfortress.com/clipboardfusion) which sits in the system tray monitoring the clipboard and removes any formatting from copied text (so such formatting is not pasted into the destination document). Thanks to Andrew for this tip. (more…)

Seagate Freeagent Go
By skid on May 19, 2008 in Security and malware | No Comments
Recently I bought a Seagate Freeagent Go portable USB drive which has the ability to load portable applications onto the drive. From what I read, it seems that this allows applications to be run from the drive rather than the host computer. I plan to use this overseas for internet banking. Can you advise whether this would be safe? For example, could I use this in an internet cafe or hotel computer without being at risk of spyware, or should I load software like Spybot onto the drive? Insufficient privileges to change time
By skid on May 19, 2008 in Windows XP | No Comments
Double clicking on the Windows XP clock to change the time produces a message saying that I do not have sufficient privileges and should contact the system administrator. Additionally, I can no longer see or access the Control Panel. The strange thing is I am an administrator of the local computer, so I don’t understand why I am being denied access. The computer has been scanned with Norton Antivirus 2007, Ad-Aware SE, and Windows Defender, but these have not detected any viruses or malware on the computer. How can I fix the permissions such that I can regain full control of the computer? (more…)

Word 2007 document display
By skid on May 16, 2008 in Tip of the Week | No Comments
Word 2007 has some very good improvements for the usability of Word, making relatively simple operations must easier to accomplish. One of my favourite aspects of Word 2007 is the new ways to display documents to assist in ease of reading and display. In Word 2007 click the “View” tab and within the “Zoom” section you will see various options. Some good features are the ability to click ?One Page to have the entire current page displayed on screen, “Two Pages” to display two pages on screen, and “Page Width” to display the current page at the full width of the Word window. Additionally, within the ?Show/Hide? section you can tick “Rule” to display the Word ruler (a must if you are working with tabs and other formatting in Word) and also “Thumbnails” which will open a pane on the left-hand side of the screen to show all pages of the document in thumbnails, allowing easy navigation between pages. When checking my email a few unopened messages always go directly into the Deleted Items folder. Why is this happening? (more…)
