Playing MPEG files
-
I recently had difficulty playing MPEG movie clips and, after searching the internet, a link appeared saying these problems can be solved by downloading a program called RegCure. Have you heard of this program, and will it solve the problem? From reading the description of RegCure it claims to also make the computer run more efficiently. The computer is running Windows XP.
When you search the internet using Google and similar search engines you will often see advertisements appearing for products which claim to fix all sorts of problems with your computer, and make the computer run more efficiently. Unfortunately, most of these programs do not live up to their claims and can actually cause more damage than good. Such advertising is designed to lure the unsuspecting user into purchasing a product which simply (in most cases) will not work. Reading reviews of the RegCure program, there seem to be a lot of users who are quite unhappy with this product and commented that the product actually caused more problems than it solved, with some people reporting that strange errors started to appear about missing files after using the product, and others who said they needed to completely reinstall Windows as RegCure corrupted the Windows installation! Therefore, I would strongly recommend that you steer clear of RegCure and any other products which put forward similar unsubstantiated claims about fixing various problems with the computer.
However, this does not bring you any closer to resolving the problem with being unable to play MPEG movie clips on the computer. I assume that you are trying to play the MPEG clips through Windows Media Player without success. It is possible that the movie clips you are trying to play have been made with a particular codec which is not installed on your computer, so your installation of Windows Media Player cannot decode the movie file. As an alternative, you could try downloading VLC Media Player (www.videolan.org/vlc) which can decode practically any media file. Another alternative player is Media Player Classic (sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/). Click the “Download guliverkli” link > “Media Player Classic” > ?mpc2kxp6490.zip?. Both these programs are open-source and free to download.
Should you still encounter difficulties playing MPEG files after trying these two alternative players, please contact me again with more specific information about any errors you encounter when attempting to play MPEG files.
