By skid on August 11, 2008 in Office, Sound, System maintainance | No Comments
I have recently purchased a new computer running Windows Vista Business Edition. Whenever I open a Microsoft Word email attachment in Word this appears as a mixture of machine language and plain text. How can I get the attachment to display correctly? (more…)

Internet Explorer 64bit
By skid on August 4, 2008 in Tip of the Week | No Comments
Users of Windows XP 64-bit may notice that two versions of Internet Explorer are present on their systems: Internet Explorer and Internet Explorer (64-bit). While the normal (32-bit) version of Internet Explorer is suitable for most web browsing, there is a good reason for the inclusion of a 64-bit version to allow compatibility with particular components on web pages which may have been written for 64-bit systems. For a complete explanation, have a look at: support.microsoft.com/kb/896457 .

Random Looping Sound in Internet Explorer, Partitioning Problems and Acrobat won’t Install
By skid on August 4, 2008 in Windows Vista | No Comments
I have recently purchased a new computer running Windows Vista 64-bit and am trying to setup the computer, but I have encountered three problems. First, when I open Internet Explorer a sound loop plays over and over which says “…….. I think we have lost him, no not yet”. This does not stop until Internet Explorer is closed, and happens regardless of whether Internet Explorer is online or offline. Disabling all Internet Explorer add-ons does not resolve the problem. Second, when setting up the computer I had Vista repartition the 500 GB hard drive into two partitions. The drive originally had a 490 GB system partition (which contains the Windows Vista operating system) with a 10 GB partition named “EISA configuration”. I used Vista to shrink the primary partition to 240 GB and then requested a second 260 GB simple partition be created. However, it seems that Vista did not create a simple partition but instead has created a 260 GB “EISA configuration” partition to which I cannot attach a disk name or even access through Windows. Vista provides no obvious way to remove this partition. How can I delete this partition and then create an accessible simple partition? Finally, I am having problems installing Acrobat Reader. I have downloaded and double-clicked on the AdbeRdr811_en_US.exe installation file, but nothing happens. Can you provide any suggestions or advice for resolving these problems? (more…)

Cleaning up Windows Boot Manager
By skid on August 4, 2008 in System maintainance | No Comments
I recently upgraded my computer from Windows XP SP2 to Windows Vista. The first upgrade did not work, so I used a recovery point and reverted the system back to Windows XP and then tried again. The second time the upgrade worked, but now every time I start Windows Vista the Windows Boot Manager screen appears offering me a choice of booting “Microsoft Windows Vista” or “Vista Home Premium (Recovered)”. If I leave everything alone it defaults to the “Microsoft Windows Vista” and loads correctly after a 30 second timeout. How can I get rid of this boot menu from the startup sequence? (more…)
