PDFs not Associated with Acrobat when Opened from Outlook.

  • When I attempt to open PDF files attached to an Outlook Express email a message appears instructing me to create a file association in Folder Options for PDF files. I have checked the Folder Options and the file association already exists. Additionally, if I save the PDF file to the computer (e.g. Desktop) and double-click on the icon it opens in Adobe Reader without any problems. The problem appears to be limited to Outlook Express. Interestingly enough, all other file types open without problem in Outlook Express. The computer is running Windows XP.

I have seen this problem before and also read about many other users experiencing similar problems. The most common solution to this problem is also the simplest – reinstalling Adobe Reader. It seems that something does go awry with the file association, but this only affects Outlook Express rather than Windows in general. I cannot explain why this happens, but the anecdotal evidence from other users has suggested the reinstallation should fix the problem. I suggest that you uninstall Adobe Reader from the “Add/Remove Programs” control panel and then go to www.adobe.com to download the latest version of Adobe Reader. Before installing Adobe Reader make sure that Outlook Express is closed. Once the installation has completed, restart the computer. Then, check Outlook Express to see whether the problem has been resolved. Please let me know how this goes, as I would be interested to know whether this is a confirmed fix for the problem in your case.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
